ASUU Strike Continues as Thursday's Meeting Ends in Draw

The meeting between the Nigerian government and university lecturers on Thursday evening ended without resolution of the nationwide strike by the lecturers.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called the strike over its demands for improved funding of universities and welfare of lecturers but with the deadlock in Thursday’s meeting, which began 3p.m and ended 8:15 p.m, the strike would continue.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said government’s discussion with ASUU will continue next week; that the meeting with the university teachers was late in coming due to the minimum wage negotiation.

He appealed to ASUU to put the interests of students as who are at the receiving end into consideration.

ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union have tendered its request and also said the meeting has been adjourned till next week.

According to him, no date has been fixed but “we will communicate the date to you tomorrow,” he told waiting journalists.

He said the union was constrained to call the strike on November 4 after its plea for the implementation of the 2009 agreement fell on deaf ears.

“Our meeting with the education minister in May and September to remind him about federal government promises to implement the agreement yielded no result,” he said.

Mr Ogunyemi earlier said the government had promised to take action on issues raised in the last MOU signed by the two parties but “it does appears that federal government is dribbling the union.”

ASUU Strike: Claims of N350,000, N500,000 Tuition Fees Untrue—Babalakin

The Federal Government negotiating team has appealed to the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to return to the negotiating table, while denying that it has proposed the imposition of N350,000 and N500,000 as tuition fees to be paid per annum by undergraduates. Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, weekend, Chairman of the team, Dr. Wale Babalakin, dismissed the figures as not only incorrect and contradictory, but also a figment of the imagination of ASUU officials peddling them around the country. He said: “We do not know from where ASUU got the figures that it has been peddling around the country. Aside from the fact that our committee has no power to impose fees on students, we are at a loss regarding the source of the said figures.” Babalakin disclosed that while the committee regarded dialogue with ASUU as the most effective way of resolving contentious issues bordering on the industrial dispute, it currently had little choice but to respond to “all...
