President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said in Ibadan, Oyo State that the agitation by the Academic Staff Union of Universities for improved welfare, infrastructure, funding and other contentious issues affecting the nation’s universities were genuine. Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the 70th Foundation Day ceremony and award of certificates to the PhD graduands and honorary doctoral degree awards to some notable Nigerians by the University of Ibadan, however, said the government could not do it alone. He called for alternative sources of funding education. The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, November 20, a public holiday to mark the Eid-El Maulud celebration. The Minister of Interior, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, called on Muslim faithful to align themselves with the prophet’s teachings which border on piety, charity, tolerance and peaceful co-existence, among others. The statement signed by the permanent secretary, Dr. MB Umar, read: “While calling on all Nigerians to uphold these virtues, with a view to overcoming the current national challenges facing the country, Gen. Dambazau assured that the Federal Government remains committed to the unity of the country and as such, will put adequate structures on ground towards ensuring that the forthcoming general elections are credible, free and fair. “ He wishes all Nigerians a joyous and peaceful Eid-El Maulud celebration.

Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has said he was willing to let Nigeria’s oil-producing states have absolute control of crude oil revenues from their domains. He, however, noted that it would not be feasible to immediately implement such policies at this stage of nation’s development. Abubakar told The Africa Report that federating units once had considerable control of their resources, unlike the current federal laws that only allow 13 percent derivation for states in the Niger Delta, where crude oil is extracted. The newly-elected Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr. Olamide George, on Sunday called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to come to his aid and that of his colleagues, saying their lives were being threatened. He stated this 48 hours after he became the Speaker of the Assembly, following the impeachment of the former Speaker and his deputy, Messrs Bamidele Oloyeloogun and Iroju Ogundeji respectively on Friday. The 18 members of the Assembly had signed and carried out the impeachments, after which George, who represents Akure North State Constituency, became the Speaker; and Abimbola Fajolu from Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo State Constituency emerged the deputy Speaker. The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has refused prayer by Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the All Progressives Congress, APC to dismiss a suit seeking the governor’s removal from office. The suit was filed by Olusegun Abraham, who was the first runner-up in the party’s governorship primary in the state in 2016. Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, while delivering his verdict on Friday, dismissed the separate objection filed by Akeredolu and his party. Justice Dimgba, rather than dismissing the suit as prayed by the Governor and the ruling party, ordered that the matter be properly commenced via a writ of summons. Justice Dimgba ordered parties to file their pleadings and all necessary processes in the suit on or before November 30. He adjourned till December 6 and 7 for the hearing.
