FOR the fifth time in less than two months,the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, failed to reach agreement on the demands by the latter which resulted to the ongoing strike in Nigeria’s public universities. After a marathon meeting between the two parties which lasted over six hours, the two parties stormed out of the venue with either side shifting ground. The meeting which had began at 4:15pm,at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity,ended few minutes after 10pm, without any headway. The meeting which was the fifth one in a series in less than two months,was convened basically to find lasting solutions to the ongoing strike by the university teachers. The federal government will again meet with the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) on Monday December 10 by 4pm, over the ongoing nationwide strike. This was disclosed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, in a statement signed by the Director of Press in the Ministry, Samuel Olowookere, in Abuja.

The National President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, has directed the striking lecturers in public universities to be ready for a very long strike. He stated this in a bulletin he sent to members of the union. He said, all ASUU members should ” be on the watch and prepare for a long drawn out struggle to salvage the university system”. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has appealed to parents and students to be patient over its decision to reposition and save the country’s university system from total collapse. ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday. We recall that the university lecturers had, embarked on strike, demanding for the implementation of the 2009 agreement it entered into with the Federal Government. The University of Ibadan International School has been shut down indefinitely, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. The school was shut down early on Monday, following the lingering crisis over the wearing of hijab by female Muslim pupils in the school. A statement posted on the main gate of the school said that the school had been shut down until further notice The statement, signed by the management of the school, advised parents and guardians to take note of the closure. “ Notice: The International School, University of Ibadan has been closed down until further notice. Please, take note ,” the statement read. The principal of the school, Mrs. Phebean Olowe, was not available for comments when a NAN correspondents visited her office.

The meeting between the Nigerian government and university lecturers on Thursday evening ended without resolution of the nationwide strike by the lecturers. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called the strike over its demands for improved funding of universities and welfare of lecturers but with the deadlock in Thursday’s meeting, which began 3p.m and ended 8:15 p.m, the strike would continue. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said government’s discussion with ASUU will continue next week; that the meeting with the university teachers was late in coming due to the minimum wage negotiation. He appealed to ASUU to put the interests of students as who are at the receiving end into consideration. The Federal Government negotiating team has appealed to the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to return to the negotiating table, while denying that it has proposed the imposition of N350,000 and N500,000 as tuition fees to be paid per annum by undergraduates. Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, weekend, Chairman of the team, Dr. Wale Babalakin, dismissed the figures as not only incorrect and contradictory, but also a figment of the imagination of ASUU officials peddling them around the country. Covenant University, Ota; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; and the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, produce the most employed graduates in Nigeria, a 2018 graduate report has found. According to the recently released Stutern Nigerian Graduate Report, 2018, Lagos State University (LASU), is the state university with the most employed graduates in Nigeria. The report shows that 83.70 percent of Covenant University graduates are employed, while UNN and UI boast of 68.18 percent and 61.76 percent respectively. “For the second time in a row, Covenant University have the most employed graduates rate in Nigeria. 13 federal universities, 4 state universities and 3 private universities made the list,” the report read in part.
